New York, December 19 — Tenth! Double figures for Tiger Woods! Nothing to do with mistresses though. Back to what World Number One is famous for, Golf.
Amid all the scandals, controversies, rumors, talks of infidelity and family feud, Tiger Woods was voted the PGA Tour player of the year on Friday by his fellow professionals
This is for the 10th time, in his 13 years on tour, that Tiger Woods has won the coveted prize.
PGA Tour chief Tim Finchem said, « The recognition by their peers is the one of the highest compliments a PGA Tour member can receive. »
Year of highs and lows
The current year has been a roller-coaster for the 33-year-old golfer. There were questions unanswered at the beginning of the year and there are questions unanswered at the end of the year.
Interestingly, the questions remain the same. When would Tiger Woods return to golf? If it was a knee surgery that kept everyone guessing at the start of the year, now it is the indefinite break that the Tiger has announced to mend his family ties, that has led conjectures being made by every follower of golf.
During the year he won six PGA Tour events, bagged the FedEx Cup and pocketed its $10 million bonus. He also had three top-10 finishes. Tiger pocketed the Byron Nelson Award for the lowest adjusted scoring average.
The Arnold Palmer Award for the money title and Jack Nicklaus Award for player of the year added another feathers in his cap.
Meanwhile, 26-year-old Australian Marc Leishman was named rookie of the year. Leishman, after Charles Howell III in 2001, becomes the first player to win the award without having won a tournament.
Finchem said, « Both players enjoyed outstanding seasons capped off by success in the play-offs. »
The awardees will be felicitated in Augusta, at the GWAA’s annual awards dinner to be held in April next year.
Things still going well for the Tiger so far as the sport goes, however all is not hunky dory with the financial bit as the athlete has lost millions by way of cancelled contracts. The home front too looks pretty grim.
The impending divorce
May we say that Tiger is about to lose one of his most precious awards when his wife, Elin Nordegren, officially parts ways with him.
Although there is no official confirmation on this as yet, people familiar with the matter Elin has roped in famous divorce lawyer, Sorrell Trope, to help her initiate and accomplish divorce proceedings.
